paib llloitutaiiucr. FRIDAY MORJUJiG, APRIL 2T, 18(55. Tub Mint Again. liecont udvioos from Washington lead to the belief tlialt , ht U. ft Branch Mint will yet lie built at the Dallas. Tbo original hilt locating it at this point, and roak ing appropriation for its erection has not met with any successful opposi tion, and the difficulty of procuring fresh legislation upon matters of this nature, encourage the belief that tho law will stand s first passed, nnd thut the Branch Mint will bo built hero. Before, when this question was agin titted, the citizons of the D:tl!cs doedod to tbo Govern motvt a plat of ground on which to erect the necessary build1 iogs. Letters havo been received, nuking that a survey of it be made, and the title to it be properly proved up. This, we believe, has boon. done. We have always contended that tbo Dalles was the most available point for a mint it ono was to be established norlb of Sun Francisco; because, to locate it at Portland would be to take it an unnecessary distance from the mines, and to pfoco it at Idaho- would pjaco it out of the way of the Casyon City and upriver gold yielding rot gions; moreover,, we believe that we lave every reason to anticipate fresh and rich tiiscovories throughout the whole circle of country to which- the Dulles is the natural centre. If there is any action which our citizens can take at the present status of the ques tion, let it be dono at once. A grain may turn, tho scale in our favor, and cur local prosperity bo made certain. Oca Cowntv Hospital. Among other matters to which tho attention of our Grand Jury was culled at their lute silling, was ibe condition o our County Hospital, and ia view of the average number ot unfortunates being treated at tho publio oxponso, they re commonded that a more suitable- and commodious building bo ronted for hospital purposes. What action our County Commissioners will see fit to tako in this' mailer, of course we can not foretell ;. but wo are of tho opinion that Wusco county is entitled to some consideration from tbo State at largo in tho way ot helping her to boar ibis burthen. Wo nro bo situated thut wo catch onclmlf of the wbolo travel into nnd from tho State every fall the emigration and returning miners, and every spring tho roineward bound rash Icavo at our gates eomo persons in a destitute and helpless condition Humanity forbids that theso persons rhould bo butSured to die or want be cause they do not bolong in our midst, and yet tho drain upon our fow tax payers is certainly much more than their just proportion for. these pur poses. We would respoctfully.com mend this subject to tho consideration of our next Legislature, and if there be no legal obstacle, suggest tho jus ticok of a relief hill to meet tho ex igeifcjY and coMinuo, without loo great a tax upon ono county, lliechaj' ill os which havo been extended to , sufferers at this gateway of the Slato Ti observe persons at work clean ing up tho streets, and presume thoy aro operating under tho direction of the city authorities, who, wo nro in formed, havo dotorminod to use every cnort la proscrro loo health of ou THIS PEN tTOKEILIjU ROUTE. Through the ki ndness of M r. Abrums of the firm ot ' Abrams & Houac, we are enabled to lay before oui rend ers a dsscription of this routo, com mencing at a point on tbo river, twoii- ty-fivo miles below the lake, and thonco up the luke and river to the flat Head and Bitter lioot Kivers; nd Ihonce. up the Flat Head to the mouth- ot the Jocko, a distance alto gether of over two hundred miles. Mr. . Abrams arrived at the ferry, twenty five miles Uolow tbo Lake, on the 12th of March, where ho was de tained until the 20th, waiting for a suitable boat to be built for tho trip p the river. Arrived at the Cabinet, distance of oightyitive roi I ok, over a route of unsurpassed beauty, free from all obstructions. Hero the river is forced through a channel of about 150 feet in width, with pcndicular rock on either side 100 feet or more in height, for a distance of one hundred yards, which presents n barrier to steamboat avigalion during high water, but at tho present low stage found no diffi. culty in making tho passage with oars alone.' From this point at a distance of six miles, a rapid or fall is met milar to the Cascades of the Colum- ia. At tuis point a portage will bo necosavy ot not over two hundre I ards, after which, for a distance of thirteen miles, thero is no obstruction in any stago of water. At this point rapid is met, with four or fivo largo boulders, which, after a caroful exam- nation, it is evident thut by removing them, this rapid will be easily nuvigat' ecL From this point tho river com pares favorably will) any stream east of tho Cascade mountains for steami boat navigation, for a distance of forty fiwo miles, when we come to tho Fulls of Thompson's Frairie, and tho upper end of tho boat route. Here a portage of loss than threo-fourths of a mile over an easy grade, without timber, becomes necessary. Then tho party' cam to a river, though' rapid, susceptible ef steam boat navigation for a distance of 75 or eighty miles, to tho mouth of tbo Jocko river, through a country, a large portion of which is well adapted to cultivation and stock raising. Mr. A. reports having met Messrs. McFurlond, JSudio, JSSarlicv and others, on their way to the mines, fiJty fivo miles this side of Thompson's Prairie; He nleo mot Mr. Saipos with bis team and cattle, on ibe Spokano Pruirie, who reported having a good trip bo far. He had ten head of cattle run off by the Indians, between White Bluffs and tbo Spokano river. Mr. Abrums mot Mr. Frank JIihU and parly twelve miles this sido of Cow Creek. Canyon' City StaosLikk.
